Transitioning to Open Access: Action and Advocacy

The Canadian Library Association's Task Force on Open Access (OA) warmly invites you to join the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), and the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) for a presentation and discussion on transitioning to open access. This is a pre-conference to the PKP Scholarly Publishing Conference 2007 (http://ocs.sfu.ca/pkp2007/index.php).

Presentations from three speakers, Heather Joseph (SPARC), Heather Morrison (CLA Task Force on Open Access), and Kathleen Shearer (CARL) will begin the half-day. These will be followed by discussion groups which will look at topics such as:
  • What policy and advocacy initiatives could my library undertake to promote open access to scholarly literature?
  • What policy and advocacy initiatives could the CLA and/or CARL undertake to promote open access to scholarly literature?
  • Sharing successful initiatives (and failures) that have been undertaken at your institution to promote open access/changes to the scholarly communications system.

If you have already registered for the PKP conference, please register again for the CLA preconference. The two registrations can be combined into one single payment if desired.

Global Market Information Database (GMID)

Global Market Information Database (GMID) from Euromonitor International has been added to the list of COPPUL subscriptions.

Euromonitor is extending a 15% discount to new and existing subscribers. COPPUL’s subscription term runs from Feb. 15, 2007 to Feb. 14, 2008. Current subscribers will join the COPPUL agreement (with a 15% discount) when their direct subscriptions come up for renewal. They will be pro-rated to the common renewal date of Feb. 15, 2008. New subscribers are welcome to join at any time.

Canadian Learning Commons Conference 2

Canadian Learning Commons Conference 2: Continuing the Conversation

Whether your institution is considering creating a learning commons, has reached the planning stage, or is up and running, you are invited to join colleagues from across North America for the second annual Canadian Learning Commons Conference in Vancouver, BC, April 29 - May 1, 2007.

Simon Fraser University Student Learning Commons and Library, in partnership with the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and University of British Columbia Library, are pleased to host this opportunity to "continue the conversation" begun last year at the University of Guelph.

Registration is now open. The conference program is still being finalized so check back for more details as the program evolves.

Gibson Library Connections presentation

The UBC Library will be hosting a presentation by Gary Gibson, of Gibson Library connections, along with his counterparts from Alexander Street Press, ebrary and Paratext. The presentation will take place on Thursday, April 19, just prior to the opening of the BCLA Conference, and is open to library staff from other COPPUL institutions.

Eileen Lawrence, Vice President Sales & Marketing for Alexander Street Press will be sharing the latest news and demonstrating many of the newly released products from this publisher of collections in the humanities and social sciences.

Gina McCue, Vice President North American Sales for ebrary will talk about recent developments from this eContent services & technology provider and supply information about plans for 2007 relating to new functionality and content.

Eric Calaluca, President of Paratext will be presenting their three databases: 19th Century Masterfile, an index to periodicals, books, patents, newspapers, and government documents for that period; Reference Universe, a resource integrating print reference sources with online databases; and Public Documents Masterfile, an electronic guide to U.S. and international public documents covering over 200 years.

Gary Gibson will wrap up with information about some of the other publishers he represents, including Xrefer and InteLex Past Masters.
