The following two products were recently added to COPPUL’s inventory of database licenses:

• Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is the first online journal featuring video demonstrations of experimental measures. This new method of scientific publishing allows researchers and students to learn new experiments much faster than traditional text journals, thereby increasing the reproducibility and the efficiency of research in the biological sciences.

• Merck Index Online is the internationally recognized encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs, and biologicals that contains more than 10,000 monographs. The entries cover a wide range of compounds that have been selected by the editors on the basis of present or historic importance and interest.

COPPUL Outstanding Contribution Award Winner

COPPUL is pleased to announce that the winner of its 2011 Outstanding Contribution Award is Mary Westell, Director of the Centre for Scholarly Communication in Libraries and Cultural Resources at the University of Calgary.

Mary Westell is being recognized for her many contributions to COPPUL Systems and Digitization work. Mary chaired the COPPUL Systems Group from 1998-2000 and the COPPUL Digitization Group from 2003-2007 and she is currently Chair of the COPPUL Digital Curation and Preservation Group. In her roles as Chair, Mary has demonstrated leadership in moving projects forward to fulfil the objectives of the respective groups.

COPPUL is pleased to recognize Mary's achievements and long record of contributions to the consortium. Congratulations to Mary!

New Products

COPPUL has added two databases to its list of subscriptions and consolidated the individual subscriptions of several members since these databases are now available exclusively from EBSCO:

• AgeLine focuses on issues related to aging in the population aged 50+ and aging-related content from the health sciences, psychology, sociology, social work, economics, and public policy. Designed for researchers, professionals, students, and general consumers, this database addresses aging issues from individual, national, and global perspectives.

• Alternative Press Index is a bibliographic database of journal, newspaper, and magazine articles from over 300 international alternative, radical, and left periodicals. Born of the New Left, the API was launched in 1969 to provide access to the emerging theories and practices of radical social change.

Nominations Sought for the COPPUL Outstanding Contribution Award

Nominations are now open for the COPPUL Outstanding Contribution Award for 2010.

This award may be given to an individual or team, working in a member library, that has made an outstanding contribution to the consortium.

Eligibility:
Individuals currently employed by COPPUL member institutions. Note: COPPUL Board members and COPPUL staff are not eligible.

Criteria:
Contributions should enhance service in multiple COPPUL libraries, i.e. have an impact within the region.

Procedures:
Nominations can be made by staff of any COPPUL member library, and should be no more than two pages in length.

Nominations must include:
* Name of individual being nominated, and home institution
* Description and impact of the exemplary contribution
* Contribution to the COPPUL mission
* Other supporting/relevant documentation
* Name of nominator and home institution
* One letter of support (the ‘seconder’)

Deadline for nominations:
January 28, 2011.

Nominations are to be sent to Sandy Slade at the COPPUL Office. A decision will be made by the Directors at the spring 2011 meeting. All nominations will remain confidential to the COPPUL Directors and staff.

• GREENR (Global Reference on the Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources), a new database from Gale Cengage.

• IBISWorld Industry Reports which provides over 700 industry research reports that include industry characteristics, conditions, performance, trends, and statistics.

In addition, COPPUL has helped members acquire two non-subscription e-book collections from Morgan and Claypool: Synthesis Digital Library of Engineering and Computer Science, and Colloquium Digital Library of Life Sciences.

COPPUL Private LOCKSS Network recognized by CACUL award

COPPUL is pleased to announce that its Private LOCKSS Network (PLN) is the co-recipient of the 2010 CACUL Innovation Achievement Award. CACUL (Canadian Association of College and University Libraries) is a division of the Canadian Library Association.

The award recognizes institutions that have contributed to the development and advancement of academic librarianship through innovative programs, services, projects, or events. COPPUL is sharing the 2010 award with the Islandora Project at the University of Prince Edward Island.

The COPPUL PLN is a distributed digital preservation system that archives collections of local significance that are not being preserved by other means. LOCKSS (“Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe”) is an open source system that allows libraries to collect, store, preserve, and provide persistent access to their own local copy of authorized content they have purchased.

• Counseling and Therapy in Video is a landmark collection in the Alexander Street Press Critical Video Editions™ series, containing more than 300 hours of training videos, reenactments, and footage of actual therapy sessions conducted by renowned psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers. The videos are designed for training and continuing education, for providing an invaluable firsthand look at the realities of working with clients, and the challenges associated with putting theoretical concepts into practice.

• Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works contains more than 2,000 transcripts of actual therapy sessions—almost 40,000 pages of first-person accounts, together with 25,000 pages of major reference works. New COPPUL member

COPPUL is pleased to announce that Mount Royal University will become a full member of the consortium on April 1, 2010. Mount Royal has been an Affiliate Member of COPPUL for many years.

Mount Royal University, located in Calgary, has a FLE enrollment of approximately 8,000. Areas of collection specialization, in addition to Arts and Science, include Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Communication, Design, Nursing, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and the Holocaust.

As a COPPUL member, Mount Royal will be participating in the national reciprocal borrowing and resource sharing agreements. They will also be part of COPPUL's interlibrary loan centralized invoicing program.

COPPUL Outstanding Contribution Award Winner

COPPUL is pleased to announce that the winner of its 2010 Outstanding Contribution Award is Mark Jordan, Head of Library Systems, Simon Fraser University.

Mark is being recognized for his many contributions to the COPPUL Private LOCKSS Network (PLN) where played a key role in identifying and resolving technical challenges that had to be overcome to ensure the successful implementation of the network.

The PLN is a project that utilizes the LOCKSS digital preservation system as a means to archive collections of local significance to members of COPPUL that are not being preserved through any other means. There are only a handful of Private LOCKSS Networks currently in production and the COPPUL PLN is the first such initiative in Canada.

Research Methods Workshop For Librarians

Over the past few years there has been an increasing emphasis on the role of librarians as researchers. But how do we, as librarians, make the leap from the gathering of information to systematic research, study and analysis?

This workshop is intended as an introductory to intermediate look at research methods, practices and strategies. Participants will learn tools and techniques for making the leap from interesting ideas to researchable topics, and from "how we done it good" reports to publishable research. The workshop will also touch on issues such as finding time to write, forming research teams, and working with colleagues from other disciplines.

Specifically, the workshop will cover:
• Overview of the research process
• Writing Research proposals
• Literature reviews
• Research methodologies
• Survey research
• Writing good research
• Analyzing & reporting results
• Statistics
• Ethical issues

Presenters:
• Dr Nancy J. Busch, Associate Dean for Administration, University of Nebraska Lincoln Libraries
• Dr Joan Giesecke, Dean of Libraries, University of Nebraska Lincoln Libraries.

About the Workshop Presenters:
Dr Busch has taught masters and doctoral level research methods classes and has experience in evaluation and assessment initiatives in public, academic and state libraries. Her doctoral research examined recruitment and retention of rural public library directors in the U.S.

Dr Giesecke’s research interests include organizational decision-making and management skills. She has published on management and supervisory skills and has just completed a book on emotional intelligence and academic library leaders.

Dr Busch and Dr Giesecke delivered this workshop to participants in the ARL Leadership and Career Development Program in 2007 as well as to a number of other university libraries throughout North America, including University of Saskatchewan in 2008.

COPPUL is pleased to announce that Kwantlen Polytechnic University will become a full member of the consortium on April 1, 2009. Kwantlen has been an Affiliate Member of COPPUL since 2004.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University is one of B.C.’s newest universities with 9,038 FTEs and four campuses located in Cloverdale, Langley, Richmond and Surrey. Areas of collection specialization include Fine Arts and design, sustainable horticulture, Sikhism, Canadian history, genocide and Holocaust studies, and postcolonial literature.

Seven COPPUL members recently participated in the one-time purchase of Cambridge Histories Online. This unique historical reference compendium of over 250 volumes is now available online for the first time, adding immense value to the texts and enhancing any aspect of historical research.

Since CHO is a one-time purchase, members are welcome to join the subscription anytime after the September 1st start date but will be eligible for the "introductory" prices only until the end of this year. Cambridge University Press is planning to increase pricing by 10% as of January 1, 2009.

Announcing the Library Information Literacy Online Network or LION TV

The ANimated Tutorial Sharing Project (ANTS) Team would like to announce the introduction of their new site: the Library Information Literacy Online Network or LION TV (http://liontv.blip.tv).

LION TV is an educational network where information literacy broadcasts are directed at teachers, professors, students or members of the general public. It will not replace the ANTS worksites used by professional librarians, but rather will serve to enhance the work of the ANTS members by providing them with (1) an online network with video sharing capabilities and a better screen resolution than YouTube, and (2) a means of pushing the broadcasts created for ANTS out to popular brand sites where people spend time online. These sites include Facebook, Blinkx, iTunes, Flickr, AOL Video, Yahoo Video, MySpace, MeFeedia, Meebo, MeeVee, Lyco Mix, del.ic.ious and Internet Archive. Even though the broadcasts are not on YouTube, they are ubiquitous.

Canadian universities’ resource sharing agreement extends from coast to coast

Toronto, Ontario: Effective January 2, 2008, Canadian university faculty, students and staff will now be supported by one Resource Sharing Agreement amongst institutions. The new agreement will extend standardized reciprocal interlibrary loan / document delivery privileges across Canada. The agreement includes:

- loan of books between participating universities at no charge
- four day turnaround time from receipt of the request to the date the item is sent
- three week loan period for books and other material that has to be returned to the supplying library
- a standard charge for provision of photocopied articles and other material that does not need to be returned to the supplying library

As a basic principle, all parties have agreed to exhaust local resource sharing opportunities before borrowing from each other.

The four signatories are Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL), Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL), Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universities du Québec (CREPUQ), and Council of Atlantic University Libraries / Conseil des bibliothèque universitaires de l’Atlantique.

This agreement builds on the past collaborative success of these four regional library consortia. Since May 2002 most Canadian universities have supported a reciprocal borrowing agreement to extend university-level library resources across the country, enabling in-person borrowing on the part of faculty, students and staff at participating institutions.

“This resource sharing agreement reflects the commitment of university libraries in creating the best possible educational opportunities and advancing Canada’s research and innovation agenda. Successful researchers tend to be intensive readers. Yet, no single university can provide all the materials required by their faculty and students. ANimated Tutorial Sharing Project Announcement

The ANTS Working Group would like to announce that we have a new site and new location for uploaded tutorials (in addition to DSpace).

The new ANTS site (which integrates the Web Page and Wiki onto one site, is now found at:

Anyone can register to make postings to this wiki or receive RSS feeds from it. In addition, you can also set up you own personal profile so people can learn more about each contributor.

Beyond this, you should notice that we expanded our repertoire of potential tutorials so that we now have a listing of Information Literacy Tutorials identified for development. Many institutions are creating some wonderful ones, and we now welcome contributions for tutorials that are not strictly e-resource tutorials. People have been asking us whether we would accept different types of tutorials and we always said yes. Now we have an official list for them.

Another new development is that we now have an additional site that you can go to in order to view tutorials and locate source code. It is located at our Screencast.com site which Techsmith so graciously allowed us to test this year for free. The Screencast.com site is a step forward as it (1) displays some tutorials – especially Camtasia ones – better than DSpace, and (2) as it provides people with the code they need to embed tutorials on Web Sites or blogs. This new site is located at:

One last bit of news: ANTS is currently doing some Beta testing on BLIP.TV. We like it as it has some wonderful push technology that would enable us to notify people of the existence of any new tutorial via some very popular Internet sites.

Both the Screencast.com and the Blip.TV sites allow people to embed source code for each tutorial. Both sites allow creators to retain ownership and assign creative commons rights so that others can use your tutorials. We still require people to upload files to DSpace initially for security and archival purposes. But we will then be moving files to sites where embedding code is available - as several people have requested it as a feature they would like to see added to the project.

Nominations Sought for the COPPUL Outstanding Contribution Award

Nominations are now open for the COPPUL Outstanding Contribution Award. (Apologies for any duplication in posting).

This new award will be given to an individual or team, working in a member library, that has made an outstanding contribution to the consortium.

Eligibility:
Individuals currently employed by COPPUL member institutions. Note: COPPUL Board members and COPPUL staff are not eligible.

Criteria:
Contributions should enhance service in multiple COPPUL libraries, i.e. have an impact within the region.

Procedures:
Nominations can be made by staff of any COPPUL member library, and should be no more than two pages in length.

Nominations must include:
* Name of individual being nominated, and home institution
* Description and impact of the exemplary contribution
* Contribution to the COPPUL mission
* Other supporting/relevant documentation
* Name of nominator and home institution
* One letter of support (the ‘seconder’)

Deadline for nominations:
January 31, 2008.

Nominations are to be sent to Sandy Slade <coppul@royalroads.ca> at the COPPUL Office. A decision will be made by the Directors at the spring 2008 meeting. All nominations will remain confidential to the COPPUL Directors and staff.

COPPUL has issued an invitation to members to participate in an offer to add the Alumni program to their existing RefWorks subscriptions at a discounted price.

The program is intended for institutions that wish to provide continued access to RefWorks for their alumni.

If your institution is able to monitor usage by alumni users (via proxy server), you will be asked to provide usage reports to RefWorks on a periodic basis. If not, RefWorks will enable your graduating students to convert their accounts to "Alumni" status, and RefWorks will track usage and provide you with an online report within Administrative Central.

An annual license fee, with a maximum number of alumni use applies. Pricing is tiered and is based on the size of your institution.

ALPSP Learned Journals Collection

ANTS News

Two new tutorials have been added to the ANimated Tutorial Sharing (ANTS) Project - http://www.brandonu.ca/library/coppul/ - which contains Open Source Tutorials for other libraries to access, modify and use.

The new tutorials are:
* Modern Language Association (EBSCOhost) Tutorial - added June 2007.
* CINAHL (EBSCOhost) Tutorial - added August 2007.

This brings the total number of tutorials in ANTS to 12.

In other news, ANTS has been gaining international attention. It has been bookmarked in several social bookmarking sites and mentioned in documents and presentations from Finland and Italy, and a blog from France. Two international volunteers have agreed to contribute tutorials to the ANTS project. They are Virginia Bender, West Virginia University, who volunteered to do two Medline tutorials, and Ann Tenglund, St. Bonaventure University, NY, who volunteered to do an English version of the tutorial for the Academic Search Premier database.

Carmen Kazakoff Lane, Brandon University, did a presentation on ANTS at the ACRL Conference held March 29 - April 1, 2007 in Baltimore. Her peer-reviewed contributed paper "Providing Innovative Services to 'Our Users' in the World of Web 2.0: The ANTS Initiative." was published in the Conference Proceedings.

COPPUL added Books 24x7 to its list of subscriptions on August 1st. The recent offer resulted in seven libraries upgrading their subscriptions to join the COPPUL agreement and five new subscribers.

Books 24x7 has extended its offer to the end of September due to the positive response from COPPUL members. Libraries can join the license until then and have their subscriptions prorated to either start on September 1st or October 1st, expiring July 31, 2008. The Books 24x7 trial account has been reactivated until August 31st.

There is a new tutorial for the America: History & Life and Historical Abstracts databases. It is avaiable from the ANimated Tutorial Sharing Project - http://www.brandonu.ca/library/coppul/ - which contains Open Source Tutorials for other libraries to access, modify and use as they wish. All tutorials are Flash tutorials and include Audio.

ANTS is an inter-institutional collaborative project created by COPPUL and it contains tutorials created by professional librarians. This list is dynamic and can be added to if you want to see a tutorial developed for another
e-resource not on it.

Withdrawn Print Journals

Call for expressions of interest in withdrawn print journal titles University of Saskatchewan Library.

The University of Saskatchewan Library has recently withdrawn a number of print journal titles which are duplicated in electronic form via the JSTOR electronic journal subscriptions. These titles were removed to meet the physical requirements of the newly created University Learning Centre and the Library Transformation Project. The Library is now in the process of disposing of these withdrawn print volumes through calls for expressions of interest. First priority will be given to interested U of S departments and colleges and then Saskatchewan and other Canadian libraries.

If you are interested in considering these titles for your library's collection please review the policies and procedures document which outlines the responsibilities of the requestor and the review process for expressions of interest. This document, along with a list of available titles, including holdings information and linear cm measurements, can be found on the University of Saskatchewan's website at: https://library.usask.ca/ULC-LTP. The Canadian Library Association's Task Force on Open Access (OA) warmly invites you to join the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), and the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) for a presentation and discussion on transitioning to open access. Presentations from three speakers, Heather Joseph (SPARC), Heather Morrison (CLA Task Force on Open Access), and Kathleen Shearer (CARL) will begin the half-day. These will be followed by discussion groups which will look at topics such as:

What policy and advocacy initiatives could the CLA and/or CARL undertake to promote open access to scholarly literature?

Gibson Library Connections presentation

The UBC Library will be hosting a presentation by Gary Gibson, of Gibson Library connections, along with his counterparts from Alexander Street Press, ebrary and Paratext. The presentation will take place on Thursday, April 19, just prior to the opening of the BCLA Conference, and is open to library staff from other COPPUL institutions.

Eileen Lawrence, Vice President Sales & Marketing for Alexander Street Press will be sharing the latest news and demonstrating many of the newly released products from this publisher of collections in the humanities and social sciences.

Gina McCue, Vice President North American Sales for ebrary will talk about recent developments from this eContent services & technology provider and supply information about plans for 2007 relating to new functionality and content.

Eric Calaluca, President of Paratext will be presenting their three databases: 19th Century Masterfile, an index to periodicals, books, patents, newspapers, and government documents for that period; Reference Universe, a resource integrating print reference sources with online databases; and Public Documents Masterfile, an electronic guide to U.S. and international public documents covering over 200 years.

Gary Gibson will wrap up with information about some of the other publishers he represents, including Xrefer and InteLex Past Masters.

NetLibrary Collection 4

COPPUL will start NetLibrary Collection 4 on March 1. The collection will be commonly referred to as COPPUL IV and libraries will see the collection listed in that way in the NetLibrary Resource Centre, where ownership and use reports can be generated.

There will be 14 libraries participating in this new collection:

RefWorks Hosting

COPPUL sites that chose to have their RefWorks/RefShare subscriptions hosted on OCUL's Scholars Portal will migrate in late April and early May. Invoices will be sent out in April and cover the period May 1, 2007 to April 30, 2008. The cost for hosting is $500 Cdn for RefWorks and $250 Cdn for RefShare.

Designing Web Sites Course

Limited space is still available in ACRL's 4-week online course, "Designing Web Sites for Academic Libraries, Part 1."

The course will be offered March 5-31. Participants will learn the basics of Web site planning and design and content development, with a concentration on academic libraries. The course will also examine Web standards, usability, and accessibility. XHTML and CSS (external) will be introduced.

NetLibrary Collection 4 to be opened March 1. Members to confirm participation by Friday, February 23.

Books 24x7 offer is being prepared. Dates and pricing not yet confirmed.

Elsevier has submitted an unsolicited offer for its Life Science Book Series with the option to include its other e-book series. COPPUL's E-Books Task Group is evaluating the offer and its timing.
